About the route
The best daytime trains are the Sri Tanjung at 13:34, the Logawa at 14:45 and the Probowangi at 05:55, all of which let you see the East Java countryside. The evening trains, the Mutiara Timur at 21:50, the Blambangan Ekspres at 22:50 and the Wijaya Kusuma at 23:48, arrive in the early hours of the morning.
The ferry from the Ketapang port to Gilimanuk on Bali takes roughly an hour, and the station is next to the terminal, so you can walk to the boat. Banyuwangi is also the starting point for the Ijen crater, where visitors climb at night to see the blue fire and the sulphur miners. Most tours leave from Banyuwangi in the early hours, so plan to arrive the day before.
