Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon are both on the narrowest stretch of the Gulf coast, and eleven trains link them across 166 km in between 2 hours 7 minutes and 3 hours 12 minutes. Ten are Special Express, Express or Rapid trains, and one is an Ordinary train.

How to buy tickets
The easiest way to buy train tickets in Thailand is online rather than going to the station. You do pay a very small commission but the ease and convenience makes it worthwhile in our opinion.
Baolau is the best site to use for buying train tickets, they have access to the live Thai Railways booking engine, so you can easily see availability, timetables and prices.
Payment can be made using international credit cards and PDF confirmation tickets are sent to your email address within a few minutes. This is the actual ticket you need to board the train, so there’s no need to exchange it at the station before travel. You may prefer to print the pdf out, but it’s also fine to show it on your mobile phone to the conductors and station staff.
How far ahead you can book depends on the train and how much of the route you ride. For full details on booking windows, see the when to book Thailand train tickets guide.

About the route
Most travellers on this route are heading for the islands, and the trains that leave in the middle of the night suit that well: the 01:08, 01:29, 01:45 and 03:15 all reach Chumphon well before the first boats, so you may have a wait at the station. In the daytime there is a Special Express at 11:41 and an Ordinary train at 13:28, and in the evening a further run of trains between about 20:04 and 22:48.
The line runs very close to the coast in places, with views of the Gulf and the hills of the Burmese border to the west. It is a pleasant daytime ride, and the Special Express at 11:41 is the best option if you want to see it from your seat rather than sleep through it.
