Fifteen trains run from Nakhon Pathom to Phetchaburi, more than on most stretches of the southern line, because the slow Ordinary and Excursion trains join the fast ones here. The 102 km takes between 1 hour 22 minutes and 2 hours 7 minutes, and the fastest services are the Special Express trains.

How to buy tickets
The easiest way to buy train tickets in Thailand is online rather than going to the station. You do pay a very small commission but the ease and convenience makes it worthwhile in our opinion.
Baolau is the best site to use for buying train tickets, they have access to the live Thai Railways booking engine, so you can easily see availability, timetables and prices.
Payment can be made using international credit cards and PDF confirmation tickets are sent to your email address within a few minutes. This is the actual ticket you need to board the train, so there’s no need to exchange it at the station before travel. You may prefer to print the pdf out, but it’s also fine to show it on your mobile phone to the conductors and station staff.
How far ahead you can book depends on the train and how much of the route you ride. For full details on booking windows, see the when to book Thailand train tickets guide.

About the route
The choice is between speed and price. The Ordinary trains, with numbers in the 250s, are slower but cheap, and they cannot be booked in advance, so you buy the ticket at the station on the day. The Special Express and Rapid trains can be booked ahead and are quicker, but apart from the 08:23 they leave in the afternoon and evening, from 16:06 to 23:43.
The stretch between the two towns crosses flat farmland, with Ratchaburi on the way, and it is a quiet ride, mostly through paddy and palm-sugar country. If you are making the trip as part of a longer circuit of the western towns, the morning departures leave you the whole afternoon in Phetchaburi to see the hilltop palace before the evening trains back.
