Going back to Bangkok from Phetchaburi, the timetable looks very different from the way out. Nearly all of the eleven direct trains are overnight services from the south that pass through between about 01:00 and 08:00, taking between 2 hours 40 minutes and 3 hours 7 minutes to cover the 167 km, and there is just one afternoon train, leaving at 15:25.

How to buy tickets
The easiest way to buy train tickets in Thailand is online rather than going to the station. You do pay a very small commission but the ease and convenience makes it worthwhile in our opinion.
Baolau is the best site to use for buying train tickets, they have access to the live Thai Railways booking engine, so you can easily see availability, timetables and prices.
Payment can be made using international credit cards and PDF confirmation tickets are sent to your email address within a few minutes. This is the actual ticket you need to board the train, so there’s no need to exchange it at the station before travel. You may prefer to print the pdf out, but it’s also fine to show it on your mobile phone to the conductors and station staff.
How far ahead you can book depends on the train and how much of the route you ride. For full details on booking windows, see the when to book Thailand train tickets guide.

About the route
That shapes how you plan. If you do not want a train in the middle of the night, the 15:25 is the one to aim for, and it gets you into Bangkok in the early evening. Otherwise the trains from about 06:00 to 07:45 work well for an early start, reaching Bangkok by about nine.
The station is a short ride from the town centre, and the old palace hill and the temples are all within reach by tuk-tuk or motorbike taxi. It is worth leaving enough time to walk through the market and the old shophouse streets before you go, since the departures are so concentrated at either end of the day.
